Robert Menzies visited West Germany to discuss German migration to Australia and bilateral trade matters, including import quotas of Australian wheat. The German trip followed the Commonwealth Prime Ministers’ Conference in London in June. Dr Konrad Adenauer, the German Federal Chancellor, hosted a dinner in honour of Menzies and Dame Pattie. Menzies told reporters that one of the main objects of his visit to Germany was to get to know Adenauer. Both leaders met for an hour and discussed Germany’s reconstruction and current European affairs.
