Summary
Inscription: 4 July 1969. ‘The Pacemaker’ by David Nicholas chronicles the life of Sir Thomas Playford (1896-1981), Premier of South Australia from 1938 to 1965. The foreword written by Menzies is heartfelt and highlights the respect shared between two record-setting statesman who served under the same Liberal Party. However, their priorities were not always aligned as Playford assumed the challenge of developing new industries in South Australia, pursuing a social and economic transformation for his state. Often lobbying for Commonwealth spending, he was relentless in turning South Australia into a diverse commercial centre, and therefore reducing their economic dependence on agriculture. Some of Playford’s efforts included lowering company tax to encourage the establishment of factories, manufacturing, and mining in South Australia. This biography examines such decisions and more, providing comprehensive insights into how the Liberal Party functioned, and how continued efforts to change and adapt policy can vastly improve living standards.
