Alfred Thorp Stirling was an Australian diplomat and writer. From 1934 to 1936, he was Menzies’ Private Secretary. Stirling joined the Department of External Affairs in 1936. He was Minister for the United States (1946-48), High Commissioner to Canada (1945-46), High Commissioner to South Africa (1948-46), Ambassador to the Netherlands (1950-55), Ambassador to France (1955-59), Ambassador to the Philippines (1959-62), Australia’s first Ambassador to Greece (1963-65) and Ambassador to Italy (1962-67).
