Douglas Stewart was a poet, editor and literary critic. He was born in 1913 at Eltham, New Zealand. Between 1940 and 1967, Stewart published seven collections of verse, the most important being his volume Sun Orchids (1952). In 1961 he joined Angus & Robertson Ltd as ‘literary adviser’. Stewart was a member of the advisory board of the Commonwealth Literary Fund from 1955 to 1970.
In an interview in 1963, Menzies reportedly said that Stewart was one of his favourite Australian poets (‘Sir Robert Menzies Tells TV Viewers of an Unfamiliar Subject’).
