Bartholomew Augustine (Bob) Santamaria was a political activist, writer and prominent Catholic layman. He was director of the National Secretariat of Catholic Action (1947-54; assistant director 1937-47), president of the Catholic Social Studies Movement (1943-57) and secretary of the National Catholic Rural Movement (1939-61). In 1957, Santamaria established the National Civic Council; he served as president of the NCC from 1957 to 1998. His anti-Communist and conservative views were influential in the Democratic Labor Party.
