All volumes have slip affixed to front endpaper recording awarded to Robert Gordon Menzies as the Bowen Prize for English Essay, March 1917. Also all volumes have University of Melbourne crest and motto embossed in gold on front cover.

Volume 1 has some marks in pencil in margins; also two blank pieces of paper enclosed between pages 64 and 65 (‘Newfoundland’ begins on page 65.)

Volume 2 includes note in pencil on back endpaper: ‘Commonwealth of Australia 777-958’; also some notes and makings in margins throughout.
