James Menzies was the father of Robert Menzies. He was employed as a coach painter in Ballarat before becoming a general storekeeper at Jeparit in 1894. He married Kate Sampson in 1889. James Menzies was a councillor of Dimboola Shire and member for Lowan in the Victorian Legislative Assembly from 1911 to 1920. From 1926, Menzies worked for BHP as a statistical officer and tariff adviser. At the time of his death he was an executive member of the Australian Industries’ Protection League.
