Francis Patrick (Frank) McManus was a schoolteacher, party official and politician. McManus joined the Australian Labor Party’s Flemington branch in 1925. In 1941 he met B.A. Santamaria and became involved in the Catholic Social Studies Movement. McManus became vice-president of the Victorian ALP in 1947. In 1955, he was expelled from the ALP following the Labor split. Running as an ALP (Anti-Communist) candidate, McManus was elected to the Senate in 1955; in 1957, he became deputy-leader of the Australian Democratic Labor Party (DLP). After being defeated in the 1961 election, McManus served as federal secretary of the DLP (1962-65). He was re-elected to the Senate in 1964 and served until 1974, becoming leader of the DLP in 1973.
