William John McKell was a premier of New South Wales and Governor-General of Australia. He left school at thirteen and worked as a boilermaker, becoming active in the trade union movement and the Australian Labor Party. McKell was premier of New South Wales from 1941 to 1947 and Governor-General of Australia from 1947 to 1953.
