Maurice Harold Macmillan was a British Conservative politician, publisher and Prime Minister (1957-63) of Great Britain. Macmillan was a member of the House of Commons from 1924 to 1929 and 1931 to 1964. He was colonial undersecretary (1942) and secretary of state for air (1945). He served in Churchill’s post-war government as minister for housing (1951-54), minister of defence (1954-55) and foreign secretary (1955). Macmillan was Chancellor of the Exchequer (1955-57) in the government of Anthony Eden. He succeeded Eden as Prime Minister and restored good relations with the United States following the Suez crisis 1956. Macmillan was the first British Prime Minister to visit Australia in 1958. He became Earl of Stockton (1984) and a member of the House of Lords. Macmillan was Chancellor of Oxford University from 1960 to 1986.
