Norman Lindsay was an Australian artist and writer. He was the brother of Lionel and Daryl Lindsay. Born in country Victoria in 1879, he followed his brother Lionel to Melbourne to work as an illustrator. In 1901, he became staff artist at the Bulletin.

In a radio talk in 1942, Menzies said of Norman Lindsay:

The amazing thing about Norman is that he’s never settled down in life. He has an itch for change. He will suddenly drop brush or etching needle to dash off a novel or a philosophic explosion, or to rush round the corner to induce a publisher to help some young writer he has discovered, some new poet, some budding teller of tales. He is no sceptic, but the impulsive believer.
