John F (Fitzgerald) Kennedy was a US Democratic politician and the thirty-fifth president of the United States (1961-63). Kennedy won a Massachusetts Congressional seat in 1946 and was elected to the Senate in 1952. Kennedy campaigned for labour law reform and civil rights; as a member of the Senate foreign relations committee, he advocated for increased US aid for underdeveloped countries. His book Profiles of Courage (1956) won a Pulitzer Prize. His presidency was marked by Cold War tensions, notably the Bay of Pigs incident (1961), the Cuban missile crisis (1962) and the nuclear test-ban treaty halting atmospheric weapons testing (1963). Kennedy was assassinated on 22 November 1963.
