Lyndon Baines Johnson was the thirty-sixth president of the United States of America. Johnson was elected to the senate in 1948 and became Senate majority leader in 1955. Johnson was Kennedy’s running mate in the 1960 presidential election and served as vice-president until Kennedy’s assassination in 1963, whereupon he became president, serving until 1969. Despite notable domestic reforms, Johnson’s presidency was marked by American’s involvement in the Vietnam War. In 1966, Johnson became the first US president to visit Australia.
