Frederic William Eggleston was a lawyer, politician, diplomat and writer. He was independent member for the seat of St Kilda in the Victorian parliament from 1920 to 1927. After state politics he was appointed first chairman of the Commonwealth Grants Commission (1933-1941) and Australia’s first minister to China 1941. Eggleston served as Australian minister to the United States of America from 1944 to 1945. He was employed as an official adviser to the Department of External Affairs (1946-1949) and lecturer to diplomatic cadets. His publications include State Socialism in Victoria (1932), Reflections of an Australian Liberal (1952) and Reflections on Australian Foreign Policy (1957).
