William Alexander (Bill) Dargie was an artist and teacher. Born in Melbourne in 1912, Dargie went on to become an official war artist (1941-46) and art advisor to the Australian War Memorial’s board of trustees. He was head of the National Gallery of Victoria School from 1946 to 1953 and a member of the Commonwealth Art Advisory Board from 1952 to 1972. Dargie won many awards, especially for his portraiture. He won the Archibald Prize eight times.
