John Grenfell (Jack)) Crawford was an economist, public servant and academic administrator. He was appointed as rural adviser to the Commonwealth Department of War Organization of Industry (1942) and director of research in the Department of Post-War Reconstruction (1943). Crawford became the founding director of the Bureau of Agricultural Economics in 1945. He became the secretary of the Department of Commerce and Agriculture in 1950 and the secretary of the Department of Trade in 1956. Crawford left the public service in 1960 and became director and professor of economics in the Research School of Pacific Studies at the Australian National University (ANU). Crawford was also vice-chancellor (1968-73) and later chancellor (1976-84) of the ANU.
