The Commonwealth Literary Fund (CLF) was established by Alfred Deakin in 1908 to provide financial assistance to struggling authors. It was run by a central committee. From 1939, the CLF was administered by a parliamentary committee chaired by Robert Menzies as Prime Minister and including representatives of the Liberal Party, the Country Party and the Australian Labor Party. The old central committee continued as an advisory board. The role of the CLF expanded to include offering annual fellowships and publication subsidies.
