The Commonwealth Art Advisory Board (CAAB) advised the Historic Memorials Committee on the commissioning of artists to paint official portraits. The Board was charged also with the responsibility of advising the Commonwealth government on the purchase of paintings for the national collection to be housed in the proposed national gallery. From 1960 the Board had authority to make contributions towards overseas exhibitions of Australian art.
