Alexander Hugh (Alec) Chisholm was a writer, journalist, ornithologist and conservationist. Chisholm joined the Royal Australasian Ornithologists Union in 1908 and campaigned for bird conservation throughout his life, writing hundreds of articles about native birds in scholarly and popular publications. Chisholm worked at the Sydney Daily Telegraph (1922-33) and the Melbourne Argus and Australasian (1933-38). He was editor-in-chief of the ten-volume Australian Encyclopaedia (Sydney, 1958), for which he received an OBE (1958).
