Arthur Augustus Calwell was an Australian Labor politician. Elected member for Melbourne (Victoria) for the Labor Party, Calwell served in the House of Representatives 1940-72. He was Minister for Information (1943-49) in the Curtin, Forde and Chifley governments and Minister for Immigration (1945-49) in the Chifley government. Calwell was leader of the opposition 1960-67. When Calwell died in 1973 Menzies said, ‘In private life we have been good and close friends and I will miss him very much’ (‘Calwell a Name to Remember – Leaders’).
