Mabel Balcombe Brookes was a writer, socialite and charity leader. Born Mabel Emmerton, she married the tennis player Norman Brookes in 1911. Her literary interests covered Australiana and Napoleonic France. Among her charitable causes, Brookes was president of the Queen Victoria Hospital (1923-70). She was appointed CBE in 1933 and DBE in 1955, for services to hospitals and charity.
