Herbert Robinson Brookes was a businessman, pastoralist, public official and philanthropist. In 1905 Brookes married Ivy Deakin, Alfred Deakin’s eldest daughter. He was president of the Victorian Chamber of Manufactures (1913-17) and was appointed to the newly established Commonwealth Board of Trade (1918-28) and the Tariff Board (1922-28). In 1929, Stanley Bruce appointed him commissioner-general to the United States. Brookes was a foundation member and vice-chairman of the Australian Broadcasting Commission (1932-39). He served on the finance committee of the council of the University of Melbourne (1933-47).
