John William (Will) Ashton was an artist and gallery director. His academic-impressionist paintings were popular in Australia. A friend of Menzies, Ashton was a member of the Commonwealth Art Advisory Board from 1918 to 1962 (chairman from 1953). He was director of the Art Gallery of New South Wales from 1937 to 1944.
